Empower your users: my account 'must haves'

A comprehensive suite of self-service functions can help reduce the load on your business by empowering customers to manage their own online account and orders, rather than requiring your assistance every time they need information or want to change details. . Not only that, with detailed information already securely stored such as previous payment details and delivery & billing addresses, future orders can be significantly quicker and easier for customers to place. This is especially prevalent for B2B customers who often have far more complex purchasing, administration and payment requirements than their retail equivalents.

A rich My Account should provide users with most, if not all, of this functionality:

  • Update and forgotten password functionality
  • Set and update customer communication preferences (i.e. newsletter)
  • Update credit/debit card information which will be stored using tokenisation to speed up any future orders and improve security
  • Manage all delivery and billing addresses including setting defaults or favourites
  • Ability to view all order history including comprehensive details and status of each (this should include order date, order number, products ordered –both SKU and quantity-, delivery address, billing address, payment type(s))
  • Manage any product subscriptions (including cancellation, additional items, frequency changes, payment updates)
  • Multiple wish lists, gift lists or wedding lists that can be shared with other users. These should also be available for you to report against for marketing and merchandising activities
  • Rate and review previously purchased products, and see your previous reviews
  • Any loyalty scheme administration (such as current balance, points, rewards etc…)
  • Saved baskets that can be reactivated, have items added or removed or be deleted
  • Quickly re-order from previous orders
  • A personal calendar with the ability to set reminders for events such as birthdays, anniversaries etc and be reminded in advance to buy a gift. You can also see what you purchased previously for such events and receive recommendations in the future
  • Submit service requests/queries/questions against an account
  • Manage any uploads, connections, comments if using features likes on-site social commerce

For B2B users there should be additional functionality on top such as:

  • Ability to quickly order using just SKUs and quantities
  • View any credit limits and outstanding balances
  • View invoices and pay any outstanding balances online with a credit/debit card
  • Export previous orders in CSV format and print them
  • Set up master and sub account functionality to manage the purchasing ability of remote sites/users/departments against a single invoicing point with the ability to control who can raise orders or approve/reject orders and set different credit limits per sub account
